Yogabhyasa

A Studio for Yoga Therapy & Practice

“YogAbhyasa (yoga + abhyāsa = steady practice) is focused on alignment, safety & personalized growth. We teach Hatha, Ashtanga & Advanced Yoga, with props, modifications, and certified, experienced teachers guiding you.”

   What “Abhyāsa” Means

Abhyāsa (अभ्यास) is a Sanskrit word meaning “practice”, “repeated effort”, and “steadiness”. In yoga philosophy (Patanjali etc.), abhyāsa is considered essential to calm the fluctuations of the mind, deepen practice, and bring about stability and growth.

YogAbhyasa

At YogAbhyasa, we are a studio dedicated to both yoga therapy and yoga practice, witha strong focus on body alignment. Our goal is to offer each student safe, effectivepractice—using props, adapting every class according to ability, so you gain strength, flexibility, and awareness without risk.

  • Styles we teach: Hatha Yoga, Ashtanga / Advanced Practice, Yoga for Weight Loss, and Therapeutic Alignment.
  • Classes are modified as needed — beginner or advanced — so each person’s body is honoured and supported.
  • We provide a clean, well-equipped, calm practice space.
  • Our teachers are experienced and certified, trained deeply in alignment, therapy, and traditional yoga styles.

Yoga Therapy

Modern work often means long hours at a desk, sitting in front of a computer. This can quietly lead to poor posture, stiff muscles, back pain, neck strain, and even stress or fatigue. Over time, these habits affect not just the body but also energy levels and focus. At YogAbhyasa, our Yoga Therapy with Posture Alignment is designed specifically for people with demanding, sitting-based jobs. Using props, safe modifications, and careful guidance, we help you:

  • Correct Posture — Realign the spine, shoulders, and hips to reduce strain.
  • Relieve Pain & Stiffness — Target back, neck, and joint discomfort caused by sitting.
  • Improve Mobility & Circulation — Counteract stiffness with stretches and strengthening.
  • Reduce Stress & Fatigue — Breathing and relaxation practices calm the mind and refresh energy.
  • Build Awareness — Learn how to sit, stand, and move with better alignment in daily life.

With certified, experienced teachers, each session is tailored to your body’s needs, making practice safe, effective, and deeply restorative.

Stiff Spine & Prāṇa Shakti

In yoga philosophy, the spine is the pathway of prāṇa shakti — the vital energy that
flows through the body. When the spine becomes stiff, the natural channels of energy
(nāḍīs) are restricted. This not only creates physical discomfort like back pain and poor
posture, but also affects the flow of energy and vitality throughout the body.

Effects of a Stiff Spine on Prāṇa Shakti:

  • Blocked Energy Flow: Stiffness restricts prāṇa movement, leading to fatigue and
    low vitality.
  • Uneven Breathing: Compression in the chest and diaphragm reduces lung
    capacity, limiting prāṇa intake.
  • Mental Restlessness: Disturbed prāṇa flow can cause anxiety, stress, and lack
    of focus.
  • Weakened Immunity: Poor circulation of energy and blood reduces the body’s
    natural defense system.

How Yoga Helps

Through gentle asanas, alignment, and breathwork, yoga restores flexibility in the spine,
reopens blocked channels, and allows prāṇa shakti to flow freely again. A supple spine
is often called the key to youth and vitality — because when energy flows without
obstruction, both body and mind thrive.

Hatha Yoga

Hatha Yoga is the foundation of all modern yoga styles. At YogAbhyasa, our Hatha classes focus on balancing body and mind through steady postures, breathing techniques, and mindful awareness.

  • Gentle & Accessible — Ideal for beginners or anyone wanting to slow down and
    reconnect.
  • Builds Strength & Flexibility — Improves muscle tone, joint mobility, and
    stamina.
  • Improves Focus & Calm — Combines movement with breath, helping to reduce
    stress and restore balance.
  • Safe Alignment with Props — We use props and modifications to make every
pose safe and effective for your body.

Hatha yoga is the perfect way to begin your yoga journey, refine your practice, and create a strong foundation for more advanced styles.

Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga Yoga is a dynamic, structured practice that combines breath with a flowing
sequence of postures. Known for building strength, stamina, and focus, it is ideal for
those who enjoy a more disciplined and energetic practice.
A Brief History
Ashtanga Yoga was systematized by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore, India, and traces its
roots to the teachings of T. Krishnamacharya, the father of modern yoga. The word
Ashtanga means “eight limbs,” described by Sage Patanjali in the Yoga Sutras —
guiding practitioners not only in physical discipline but also in breath, focus, ethics, and
meditation.

Benefits of Ashtanga Yoga

• Builds strength, flexibility, and endurance
• Improves focus, discipline, and self-awareness
• Detoxifies the body through breath and movement
• Offers a moving meditation, calming the mind while energizing the body

At YogAbhyasa, our Ashtanga classes are guided with care to support steady progress.
With the guidance of experienced teachers, including workshops by Ajay Tokas —
Senior Ashtanga Teacher, you’ll have the chance to deepen your practice and
experience the transformative power of this rich tradition.

Breathwork with Alignment & Props

At YogAbhyasa, we integrate breathwork (prāṇāyāma) with posture alignment and the intelligent use of props to create a safe and powerful practice.

Alignment First: When the body is properly aligned, the chest, diaphragm, and lungs open fully, allowing deeper, smoother breathing.
Props for Support: Using props like bolsters, blankets, or chairs, students can maintain correct posture without strain, making breathwork accessible to all — from beginners to those recovering from stiffness or fatigue.
Deeper Oxygenation & Energy Flow: Proper alignment ensures prāṇa (life energy) circulates freely, energizing the whole system.
Calm & Clarity: Focused breath reduces stress, improves concentration, and balances the nervous system.
Therapeutic Benefits: Especially useful for people with long sitting hours, postural issues, or respiratory challenges, this approach helps release tightness and restore vitality.

At YogAbhyasa, breathwork isn’t just about inhaling and exhaling — it’s about creating space in the body through alignment and props, so prāṇa shakti can flow without obstruction.

Why Practice Āsanas Before Prāṇāyāma?

In yoga, āsana (posture practice) prepares the body for the deeper work of prāṇāyāma (breath regulation). Without preparation, the body may feel stiff, the breath shallow, and the mind restless.

Key Reasons:
Opens the Body: Āsanas release stiffness in the spine, chest, and diaphragm so the lungs can expand fully during prāṇāyāma.
Improves Circulation: Physical movement warms the body, removes sluggishness, and supports healthy energy flow.
Builds Stability: Āsanas strengthen and align the body so you can sit steadily and comfortably for longer periods of breathwork.
Calms the Mind: Physical practice quiets restlessness, preparing the mind for deeper focus.
Cleanses the System: Gentle twists, stretches, and inversions clear blockages, so prāṇa shakti can move freely.

As Sage Patañjali describes, āsana is the foundation — once the body is steady and at ease, prāṇāyāma unfolds naturally.

Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa Yoga is a dynamic and flowing style of yoga where movement is linked with breath. Each posture transitions smoothly into the next, creating a rhythm that feels like a moving meditation.

What to Expect in Vinyasa Classes
Breath-Led Movement: Every inhale and exhale guides the flow of postures.
Creative Sequences: No two classes are the same — sequences vary to keep practice fresh and engaging.
Strength & Flexibility: Builds stamina, tones muscles, and improves joint mobility.
Mind-Body Connection: Breath awareness calms the mind while energizing the body.

Benefits of Vinyasa Yoga
• Enhances cardiovascular fitness while building strength
• Improves balance, coordination, and focus
• Reduces stress and promotes mindfulness
• Supports weight management through active movement

At YogAbhyasa, Vinyasa Yoga is taught with care and awareness, making it suitable for both beginners seeking energy and advanced practitioners wanting depth. Our experienced teachers ensure each class balances challenge with relaxation, so you leave feeling strong, light, and centered.

Yoga Therapy for Knee Pain

Long sitting hours, poor posture, sports injuries, or even simple daily habits can cause knee pain, stiffness, or instability. When ignored, this discomfort often spreads to the hips, ankles, and spine.

At YogAbhyasa, we use alignment-based yoga therapy to protect, strengthen, and heal the knees. Through careful guidance and safe practice, we help students:
Correct Misalignment: Postures are taught with attention to hip, thigh, and ankle alignment, reducing unnecessary strain on the knees.
Strengthen Supporting Muscles: Gentle strengthening of thighs, calves, and hips stabilizes the knee joint.
Improve Flexibility & Mobility: Safe stretches release tightness in surrounding muscles, easing pressure on the knees.
Relieve Pain & Stiffness: Consistent practice reduces inflammation, improves circulation, and supports joint health.
Build Awareness: Students learn how to sit, stand, and move in ways that protect the knees daily.

With alignment and therapeutic yoga, knee pain is not just managed — it can be reduced and prevented, restoring freedom of movement and confidence in practice.

hip

Yoga Therapy for Hips

Long sitting hours, stress, or lack of mobility often cause tight hips, which can lead to lower back pain, knee strain, and reduced flexibility.

At YogAbhyasa, we use therapeutic yoga and alignment work to create space in the hip joints, releasing tension and restoring freedom of movement.

Benefits of Hip Therapy
Creates Space in the Hip Joint: Alignment-based postures reduce compression, improve circulation, and bring ease to the hips.
Releases Tightness: Gentle, mindful stretches open the hips, relieving stiffness from prolonged sitting.
Improves Posture: Balanced hips support a healthy spine and upright alignment.
Eases Back & Knee Pain: Free hips reduce unnecessary pressure on surrounding joints.
Enhances Flexibility & Mobility: Restores natural range of motion for daily life and advanced practice.
Balances Energy: In yoga philosophy, the hips are linked to stability and grounding; freeing them restores calm and confidence.

With steady, alignment-focused practice, hip therapy helps you move freely, reduce pain, and feel more grounded in both body and mind.

Yoga Therapy for Shoulders

The shoulders carry much of our daily tension — from long hours at the desk to stress and poor posture. This often causes stiffness, pain, and restricted movement, which can affect the neck, back, and even breathing.

At YogAbhyasa, we use therapeutic yoga and alignment techniques to create space in the shoulder joints, releasing tightness and restoring natural mobility.

Benefits of Shoulder Therapy
Creates Space in the Joints: Alignment-based work relieves compression and improves circulation in the shoulders.
Releases Tension: Gentle stretches and supported postures ease stiffness from stress and long sitting.
Improves Posture: Balanced shoulders help correct rounded backs and forward head posture.
Eases Neck & Upper Back Pain: Restores balance between shoulders, neck, and spine.
Enhances Mobility & Strength: Builds stable, flexible shoulders for both daily movement and advanced yoga practice.
Boosts Breathing & Energy: Open shoulders free the chest, improving lung capacity and prāṇa flow.

With safe, alignment-focused yoga therapy, stiff shoulders transform into strong, open, and relaxed joints — helping you move with freedom and breathe with ease.
